The Department of Sanskrit, in collaboration with Sanskrit Sahitya Sabha and under the aegis of IQAC, St. Stephen's College, organized a one-day National Seminar on the theme “Motherhood and Mother’s Love: An Exploration of Mother in Sanskrit Literature.”

The seminar began with a manglacharan by students, followed by lamp lighting. Dr. Pankaj Kumar Mishra, Head of the Sanskrit Department and seminar convenor, presented the concept note, emphasizing the lack of attention given to a mother’s love in Sanskrit literature. He identified three archetypes of mothers—biological, foster, and spiritual—and drew examples from classical texts.

The inaugural session featured Prof. Omnath Bimali as Chief Guest, with Prof. Meera Dwivedi, Dr. Ashutosh Dayal Mathur, and Prof. John Varghese, Principal of St. Stephen’s College, offering their insights. Prof. Varghese remarked, “Since God can’t be everywhere, He created mothers. It’s time to illuminate what has been overlooked for years.”

Eighteen research papers were presented in three sessions, selected from over 80 submissions by scholars from across India. The sessions explored various facets of motherhood in Sanskrit literature, enriching the academic discourse.

The Valedictory Session was graced by Prof. Bharatendu Pandey, who provided deep insights, and Dr. Narayan Dutt Mishra, Editor-in-Chief of Vartaavali, who delivered a special lecture.

All presenters were felicitated with mementos and certificates. Dr. Mishra announced plans to publish a book based on the seminar’s papers. The seminar concluded with appreciation for the warm hospitality and meaningful discussions that highlighted the nuanced portrayal of motherhood in Sanskrit literature.
