Bhagavad Gita: Trust works better with steady action; Arjuna and farmer show why
A wheat farmer in Punjab sows his crop in November. He cannot make the rain arrive on time or hurry the grain along. Still, he walks the fields every morning to clear weeds and check the channels. For him, trusting the process has never meant sitting at home.Chapter 3 Verse 4 of the Bhagavad Gita makes the same point. Krishna tells Arjuna that simply avoiding work does not bring freedom from action.
Nor does giving things up, on its own, lead to perfection. Letting go of results and stopping effort are two very different things.Trust Is Not a Pause ButtonSome people hear "trust the process" and step back entirely. The job application goes out, and then nothing else happens for weeks.Trust works better alongside steady action. Follow up with the recruiter. Keep improving the portfolio in the meantime.Freedom Comes Through WorkKrishna uses the word naishkarmya, a state where action no longer binds a person.
Oddly enough, the route to it runs straight through work.Stopping early skips the very practice that builds this freedom.Nobody Stays Idle AnywayIn the next verse, Krishna notes that no one can remain without action even for a moment. Nature keeps everyone moving. So the real choice lies between purposeful action and drifting. Drifting still produces results, just not the ones you choose.Know Which Part Is YoursThe farmer controls sowing and weeding.
Rainfall and market prices sit well beyond him.Doing the controllable part fully makes it far easier to trust the rest. Worry shrinks once the effort is complete.Arjuna Considered Walking AwayArjuna suggested that renouncing the fight might be the nobler path. It looked peaceful from where he stood.Krishna disagreed. Giving up his duty would not free Arjuna. It would only leave his work undone.Harvest Time Chapter 3:4 warns us not to mistake withdrawal for wisdom.
Trust and effort belong together. The farmer's wheat came in late this year after a dry spell. Careful weeding kept the yield steady, and the grain sold at a fair price in April.Get the latest astrology news and horoscope updates. Download the TOI App.
