Bureau Chief Rajesh Kumar Varma | Jaipur | In a surprising move for India, Mahamandaleshwari Himangi Sakhi has announced that she will contest the upcoming Lok Sabha elections from Varanasi against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Sakhi is a spiritual leader and head of the Niranjani Akhara, one of India’s most powerful religious sects. She is also a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad, the highest body of Hindu saints in India.
Sakhi’s decision to contest against Modi came as a surprise to many, as she is not a politician and has no prior experience in electoral politics. However, she has said that she is entering the fray to “challenge the anti-people policies of the Modi government”.
Sakhi may face an uphill battle against Modi, who is considered one of the most popular leaders in India. However, he has said that he is confident of winning the elections, as he has the support of the “common people”.
Sakhi’s candidature has added a new twist to the Varanasi Lok Sabha seat, which is considered one of the most prestigious constituencies in India. Modi has been representing Varanasi since 2014 and is contesting again from this seat.
Other candidates in the fray from Varanasi include Congress leader Ajay Rai and Samajwadi Party leader Shalini Yadav. Voting for Varanasi Lok Sabha seat will be held on May 12.
It remains to be seen whether Sakhi will be able to make a dent in Modi’s popularity in Varanasi or not. However, his decision to contest against the Prime Minister has certainly made the election more interesting.
