According to religious texts, on the new moon day of Kartik month, Lord Shri Ram returned to his birthplace Ayodhya city after completing the period of exile after 14 years. On this occasion, the entire Ayodhya residents welcomed Lord Shri Ram by organizing Deepotsav. Since then, every year the festival of Diwali is celebrated with the same joy on the new moon day of Kartik month. Along with this, houses as well as surrounding places are also decorated with lights.

Why was Diwali celebrated during the Mahabharata period?

In the famous Hindu text Mahabharata, it is told that on the new moon day of Kartik month, the Pandavas returned to their home after completing 13 years of exile. Let us tell you that the Kauravas defeated them in chess and punished them with exile for 13 years. When the Pandavas returned to their home, the city residents welcomed them with Deepotsav in the joy of their arrival home. It is believed that the Diwali festival has been celebrated since then.

Why is Goddess Lakshmi worshipped on Diwali? (Lakshmi Puja on Diwali)

It is described in the scriptures that when the gods and demons were churning the ocean. Then 14 gems were produced from the churning of the ocean, one of which was Mata Lakshmi. It is believed that Mata Lakshmi was born on the Amavasya date of Kartik month. Therefore, Lord Ganesha and Mata Lakshmi are worshipped on the day of Diwali. According to religious beliefs, by worshipping Maa Lakshmi on this day, one gets happiness, prosperity, wealth, fame, and glory, and all the wishes of the devotees are fulfilled.

Why Choti Diwali is Celebrated before Diwali?

It is also described in the scriptures that when a demon named Narakasura created havoc in all three worlds with his terror. Then all the gods and goddesses and sages were troubled by his atrocities. Then Lord Shri Krishna killed Narakasura. Happiness was celebrated for 2 days to commemorate this victory. Which is known as Narak Chaturdashi i.e. Chhoti Diwali and Diwali.
