On the sidelines of Chhath, women devotees still have Nitish on the horizon

As the four-day Chhath festival unfolds across Bihar, the ghats of the Ganga and smaller rivers are filled with chants, diyas, and devotion. Yet, amid the traditional rituals and prayers, conversations among women devotees subtly reflect the state’s political mood — and one name still echoes frequently: Nitish Kumar.

Many women observing the Chhath fast — known for its rigorous rituals and deep faith — continue to express their faith not only in the Sun God but also in the leadership of Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. For years, Nitish has positioned himself as a champion of women’s empowerment through schemes like Mukhyamantri Kanya Utthan Yojana and reservation for women in panchayats and government jobs.

At several ghats in Patna, Nalanda, and Gaya, women devotees shared that while political debates do not belong to sacred festivals, Nitish’s contributions to social welfare, education, and safety for women remain fresh in memory.

“We don’t talk politics during Chhath, but Nitishji’s work for women can’t be ignored. Many of us got educated or employed because of his schemes,” said Sunita Devi, a devotee from Rajgir, as she prepared offerings for the arghya.

Political analysts note that such grassroots goodwill, particularly among women voters, could play a significant role in the upcoming elections. While the political landscape in Bihar remains fluid, Nitish’s enduring image as a “leader for women” seems to remain intact, even as alliances shift.

As the final offerings of Usha Arghya mark the end of Chhath, the devotion at the ghats remains spiritual — but the undercurrent of political sentiment quietly lingers along the riverbanks.
