Cyclone Montha Heads for Andhra Coast: Alert Raised in Andhra & Odisha

What’s happening

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a high-alert for parts of eastern India as Cyclone Montha intensifies over the Bay of Bengal. It is forecast to make landfall between the towns of Machilipatnam and Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh by the evening of October 28 2025

Both Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring Odisha are bracing for the storm, which brings the threat of extremely heavy rainfall, strong gusty winds, and possible storm surge along the coast. The IMD has warned residents to switch off electricity, avoid danger zones and heed evacuation orders where applicable.

Why it matters

  • Coastal risk zone: The landfall zone lies in a highly populated and low-lying coastal region. Fishing communities, small towns and port areas are vulnerable to flooding, wind damage and the disruption of services.

  • Agricultural and economic impact: Heavy rainfall in coastal Andhra/Odisha could damage crops (especially paddy in its harvesting stage) and disrupt transport and logistics (ports, roads).

  • Disaster preparedness test: India has been improving its cyclone early-warning systems and evacuation strategies. How well local administrations respond to Montha will be under scrutiny.

  • Larger weather pattern: Earlier forecasts from the IMD had warned of above-average rainfall in October for many parts of India.  Montha’s arrival could accentuate those effects, potentially causing secondary flooding or impact beyond the immediate coast.

What’s expected & official response

  • The IMD has classified Montha as a “severe cyclonic storm” as it approaches land.

  • Authorities have advised residents along the coast to keep electricity off in vulnerable zones, and boats have been anchored/moved away from exposed shores.

  • Evacuation relief shelters have been put on standby; local governments in Andhra, Odisha are coordinating with the IMD and disaster management agencies.

  • Ports and harbour operations may be suspended or restricted in the affected area; coastal communities (fishermen) have been asked to refrain from venturing into the sea.

What to watch out for

  • Actual landfall timing & track deviation: If the cyclone shifts north or south, areas beyond the initial forecast zone may also face danger.

  • Storm surge: Coastal inundation could impact vulnerable towns, especially if compounded by high tide.

  • Rainfall inland: While the focus is on the coast, heavy rain may move inland, affecting the hinterland regions of Andhra, Odisha—potentially causing flash floods and landslides.

  • Infrastructure & service disruption: Power outages, communication breakdowns, road/rail disruptions are likely. Emergency services will need to manage such disruptions.

  • Post-event recovery: Once the cyclone passes, the restoration of services (electricity, drinking water, roads) and assessment of damage will be critical.
