Energy Trade Principles Applied Selectively: Jaishankar’s Swipe at US After Meeting Rubio

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar took a subtle swipe at the United States on Sunday, suggesting that principles governing global energy trade were being applied “selectively.” His remark came shortly after a meeting with US Senate Intelligence Committee Chair Marco Rubio, during his ongoing visit to Washington.

Without directly naming the US, Jaishankar hinted at the perceived double standards in how Western nations address oil purchases from certain countries — a reference widely seen as linked to India’s continued crude imports from Russia amid Western sanctions.

“Energy trade principles should be consistent and not selectively applied based on political convenience,” Jaishankar said, emphasizing that nations must have the freedom to make choices that align with their own energy security and economic interests.

The comment follows persistent Western criticism of India’s purchase of discounted Russian oil following the Ukraine conflict. New Delhi has consistently defended its position, arguing that such imports are crucial for managing domestic fuel prices and maintaining economic stability.

During his meeting with Senator Rubio, Jaishankar discussed a range of issues including India–US strategic ties, cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, and developments in West Asia and Ukraine. He later described the exchange as “open and productive,” reflecting the growing bipartisan support in Washington for stronger engagement with India.

Jaishankar’s visit comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and shifting global alliances, where New Delhi continues to emphasize strategic autonomy — balancing relations with major powers while safeguarding its national interests.

“India’s foreign policy is guided by its own priorities, not by pressure or expectations from others,” Jaishankar had earlier stated in a separate interaction with the Indian diaspora.

The External Affairs Minister is scheduled to meet other senior US officials and engage with business and policy leaders during the remainder of his visit, which aims to deepen cooperation on defense, technology, and energy security.
