Carl Lewis: Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon Symbolises Inclusion, Perseverance and Power to Ignite Change

Legendary nine-time Olympic gold medallist Carl Lewis has called the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (VDHM) 2025 a celebration of inclusion, perseverance, and the power to inspire change through sport. Speaking at a press conference in New Delhi, the International Event Ambassador for the World Athletics Gold Label Race shared his enthusiasm and urged runners to embrace the transformative spirit of the event.

“Breaking barriers is at the very heart of what the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon represents,” Lewis said. “It’s not just about running; it’s about inspiring a cultural shift that unites people from all walks of life. When amateurs run alongside Olympic champions, it creates a sense of belonging and empowerment. Every runner can proudly say, ‘I ran with her, I ran with him.’ That’s the true essence of inclusion and perseverance.”

Offering advice to young athletes, Lewis reflected on his own journey to greatness. “Success requires sacrifice and resilience,” he noted. “I missed out on many things because I was focused on my dream. Greatness demands discipline and patience — don’t chase instant rewards. Keep your eyes on the long-term goal and never stop improving.”

Carl Lewis, regarded as one of the greatest athletes in history, won nine Olympic gold medals between 1984 and 1996 — more than any other track and field athlete in modern times. His 1984 performance in Los Angeles, where he won four gold medals, drew comparisons to Jesse Owens’ historic 1936 triumph. Lewis went on to break records in Seoul 1988, shine again in Barcelona 1992, and claim his fourth consecutive Olympic long jump gold in Atlanta 1996.

The Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon, known for its world-class organisation and participation from elite as well as amateur runners, will be flagged off from Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on October 12, 2025. The scenic route will pass through Delhi’s iconic landmarks, including Lodhi Gardens and India Gate, showcasing the city’s vibrant spirit.

With Carl Lewis as its ambassador once again, the 2025 edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon aims to inspire thousands to test their limits, embrace fitness, and celebrate the unifying power of running.
