Drive Smart, Stay Safe – Delhi Takes a Big Step Towards Safer Roads Delhi Traffic Police Launches Extensive Citywide Road Safety Campaign

Mahesh Chandra - Delhi

In a major push to promote road safety and responsible commuting, the Delhi Traffic Police, under the leadership of Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic Headquarters) Shri Satya Vir Katara, has launched a comprehensive citywide Road Safety Campaign. This far-reaching initiative was designed to engage citizens across all sections of society—including cyclists, auto and taxi drivers, hotel staff, school children, and public transport personnel. The campaign aimed to raise awareness about traffic rules, promote women’s safety, and encourage a culture of respectful and disciplined behavior on the roads.

Shaping Young Citizens: Road Safety Education in Schools

One of the most impactful aspects of the campaign was its focus on educating students—the future road users of the nation. The Delhi Police conducted awareness programmes at Birla Boys Senior Secondary School in Kamla Nagar and St. Mary’s Senior Secondary School in Mayur Vihar Phase III, where approximately 2,050 students and 57 teachers enthusiastically participated. These sessions were designed to instill the basics of traffic discipline and road sense through interactive demonstrations and engaging Road Safety Quiz Competitions. The students not only gained vital knowledge but also actively participated by asking questions and sharing their own thoughts on safe road habits.

Pedaling Safely: Cycle Awareness and Visibility Campaign

To address the risks faced by cyclists—who are among the most vulnerable groups on the road—the Delhi Traffic Police organized a dedicated Cycle Conspicuity and Awareness Drive at various key locations. As part of this effort, cyclists were educated about essential safety practices such as the use of helmets and adherence to traffic signals. To enhance their visibility during nighttime travel and reduce the chances of accidents, reflective tapes were affixed to their bicycles. This thoughtful initiative highlighted the department’s commitment to inclusive road safety for all users.

Promoting Responsibility Among Auto and Taxi Drivers

In an effort to engage public vehicle operators, a special Road Safety and Courtesy Awareness Session was held at Gazipur Under Flyover and R.K. Ashram Metro Station. A total of 74 auto and taxi drivers attended these sessions, which focused on the importance of obeying traffic rules and treating passengers, especially women, with respect. The sessions encouraged drivers to create a safe and courteous environment during every ride, reinforcing the role of professionalism in public transport services.

Say No to Noise: No Honking Awareness Drive

To combat the growing issue of noise pollution in the city, Delhi Traffic Police has been actively running its “No Honking” campaign across several prominent locations including Tarak Hospital in Dwarka, Max Hospital in Patparganj Industrial Area, and Lady Hardinge Kalawati Hospital. During these drives, a total of 2,300 road users were sensitized about the harmful health effects of unnecessary honking. Through direct interaction, the campaign spread the message that silence on the road is not just polite but also essential for the well-being of patients and the general public.

Training Public Transport Professionals: Safer Roads Begin with Skilled Drivers

Recognizing the critical influence of public transport operators on road safety, the Delhi Traffic Police also conducted structured training sessions for DTC and Cluster Bus staff. These sessions were held at the DTC Bus Depot in Mundela and the Nand Nagri Training School. A total of 47 DTC bus drivers, 27 conductors, and 7 transport officers were trained on key topics such as traffic law compliance, pedestrian awareness, proper braking techniques, and appropriate behavior on the road. The training aimed to instill a sense of accountability and ensure safe driving practices among those who serve thousands of commuters daily.

Senior officers including Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Sh. Ajay Chaudhary, Additional Commissioner of Police (HQ Traffic) Sh. Satya Vir Katara,  Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ-I Traffic) Sh. Shashank Jaiswal and Deputy Commissioner of Police (HQ-IITraffic) Sh. S.K.Singh praised the Road Safety Cell for its unwavering dedication and successful execution of the campaign. They emphasized that such initiatives are vital for long-term behavioral change and improved compliance with traffic regulations, especially among public-facing transport staff.

The Delhi Traffic Police remains firmly committed to its mission of building a safe, respectful, and efficient road environment for all. Through education, enforcement, and engagement, the department continues to work tirelessly to reduce road accidents and ensure that every citizen experiences a safer journey, every day.
