Mahesh Chandra - Delhi
The Crime Branch’s NDR Unit has achieved a significant success with the arrest of Veerpal @ Maiju, a 60-year-old resident of Bakshi Ka Talab, Lucknow. He had been declared a Proclaimed Offender in connection with a 2004 murder case and had been evading arrest for over two decades.
Accused Veerpal had been on run since 2004 after killing his wife, and never got arrested in the case. He had been living in Lucknow by changing his identity and got a new identity in name of Vijay @ Ramdayal.
Background & Arrest
Veerpal @ Maiju, originally a resident of District Farukhabad, U.P., was wanted in FIR No. 681/2004 dated 22.09.2004 under Sections 307/302/34 IPC registered at PS Jahangir Puri, Delhi. The accused had been declared a Proclaimed Offender by the Hon’ble Court on 22.01.2005. Since then, he had been absconding and living in Lucknow under a changed identity Vijay @ Ramdayal.
Case Details
On 22.09.2004, PS Jahangir Puri received information that a tenant had vacated a room after grievously injuring his wife and child. Upon reaching the location at Jahangirpuri, Delhi police discovered the woman lying in a pool of blood, while the injured child was rushed to the hospital. The scene revealed signs of a violent assault: the victim’s mouth was gagged with a saree, broken bangles, a blood-stained brick, and a broken tooth were found near the body.
Due to timely medical intervention, the child survived and provided a crucial statement identifying the attackers as his father Veerpal @ Maiju and uncle Suresh @ Saiju. A case was subsequently registered. The victim was identified as the second wife of accused Veerpal.
While Suresh Kumar was arrested, tried, and sentenced to life imprisonment on 26.09.2007 (currently lodged in Tihar Jail, Delhi), Veerpal managed to escape and remained on the run until now.
Investigation & Operation
A specialized team of the NDR Unit was formed to track down and apprehend the absconding criminal. Under the leadership of Insp. Vivek Malik, the team—which included SIs Imran Khan, Devi Dayal, Gurmeet, Umardeen, and HC Ramnaresh—undertook extensive surveillance, combining manual tracking with technical inputs.
Persistent efforts revealed that the accused had changed his identity to Vijay s/o Ramdayal, disposed of his ancestral property in Farrukhabad, and had severed all ties with his native village to avoid detection.
Following precise intelligence gathering, a targeted operation was carried out at his suspected hideout in Lucknow, U.P., resulting in his successful arrest. During preliminary interrogation, he confessed to his role in the crime.
