Amidst language controversy, Marathi saint's film teaches the lesson of love, not hatred and controversy

Mahesh Chandra - Delhi

Based on the life of great saint and poet Tukaram, a contemporary of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, this film takes you to the 16th century. Made after a long research and discussions with religious scholars, this film presents the biography and works of that great poet and social reformer Sant Tukaram with complete honesty. The entire unit of the film and the actors spent a long time in a small village of Maharashtra so that the film could bring alive that era and environment. The hard work of director Aditya Om and the lead and supporting actors of the film is clearly visible. It is a coincidence that the film was released at a time when those involved in power politics in Maharashtra and some states of the South are trying to shine their politics by opposing Hindi. They should learn from the makers of this film that they made the film of this great Marathi saint in Hindi. Talking to the media before the media screening of the film, the young director of the film Aditya Om said that it is a matter of pride for me to make a film on a great saint. I want today's young generation to have knowledge of these great saints of ours. In future also films should be made on Sant Kabir, Sant Tulsi Das and Kabir.

Story Plot

This film, shot from start to last with the rural community in a village some distance away from Kolhapur in Maharashtra, presents Tukaram's Bhakti movement and his social revolutionary with complete honesty. Tukaram, who has left the attachment of his young children and wife and is engrossed in the devotion of his Vitthal, has to face the taunts of his wife at home and the opposition of the conservative Pandit community in the village, but through his compositions and abhangs, he keeps raising his voice against untouchability, caste discrimination, superstitions and stereotypes prevalent in the society.

Acting, Direction

The acting of Marathi superstar Subodh Bhave is the USP of this film. With his excellent acting, he has brought Tukaram's character alive on screen. Arun Govil shined in the role of Lord Vitthal, Sanjay Mishra was impressive despite a small role, Sheena Chauhan was unmatched in the role of Tukaram's wife, the supporting actors of the film played their roles well, director Aditya Om has done justice to the script.

Overall

This film of young director Aditya with full honesty and dedication on Sant Tukaram Maharaj, along with presenting his historical and social role in depth, shows how this great saint of Maharashtra connected people in every village through his kirtan and bhajans and was engaged in the campaign to create an environment of equality in the society through devotion. After watching the film, you will feel that Maharaj's personality was rebellious, but this rebellion was inspired by love and compassion. Marathi superstar Subodh Bhave, who is considered the king of Marathi biopic films, has brought Sant Tukaram alive on screen with his powerful acting.
