In a major push towards environmental stewardship and urban greenery, the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) organized a special tree plantation drive today at Sardar Patel Marg under the nationwide initiative Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam — inspired by the vision of Hon’ble Prime Minister and led by the Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Shri Vinai Kumar Saxena, informed by NDMC - Vice Chairman , Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal today.

Hon’ble LG Shri V.K. Saxena planted an Amaltas (Cassia fistula) sapling, symbolizing hope and resilience. Accompanying him, NDMC Chairman Shri Keshav Chandra and Hon’ble Member of Parliament (New Delhi), Ms. Bansuri Swaraj, jointly planted a vibrant Pride of India (Lagerstroemia speciosa) sapling.

NDMC Vice Chairman Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal contributed by planting a radiant Gulmohar (Delonix regia) tree, reinforcing NDMC’s commitment to greening the Capital.

On the occasion, Shri Kuljeet Singh Chahal elaborated on NDMC’s special “Gap Filling Campaign”—a strategic effort launched from 1st July 2025 to ensure continuous green cover along 80 major roads, intersections, and roundabouts across NDMC areas. Unlike previous years where only a few stretches were covered, this year’s drive scales up significantly, aiming to eliminate barren or patchy areas with lush vegetation.

Shri Chahal said that this focused initiative, meticulously monitored by NDMC’s Horticulture Department, not only enhances visual aesthetics but also directly contributes to reducing urban air pollutants such as PM10, PM2.5, and PM1, thereby improving air quality and public health.

Shri Chahal further shared that under the direction of Hon’ble LG, the Delhi Government has undertaken a parallel large-scale greening project along Sardar Patel Marg, with the plantation of over 12,000 flowering trees and shrubs. This includes iconic species like Amaltas, Queen’s Crepe Myrtle, Rosy Trumpet Tree, and Bougainvillea. Notably, mature saplings are being used to ensure immediate impact, especially during the ongoing monsoon season.

This drive marks a significant step in NDMC’s broader environmental vision aligned with national goals under Viksit Bharat @2047. Through green infrastructure, NDMC aims to create a healthier, more livable, and climate-resilient capital city.

NDMC remains steadfast in promoting sustainability, enhancing biodiversity, and involving citizens in building a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful New Delhi.
