RJD expels 27 leaders for anti-party activities ahead of Bihar Assembly polls

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) on Monday expelled 27 of its leaders from the party for a period of six years, citing anti-party activities during the ongoing Bihar Assembly elections.

The disciplinary action follows reports that several of these leaders either contested as independent candidates or actively campaigned against the party’s official nominees across various constituencies in the state.

In an official communication issued on Monday, RJD state president Mangani Lal Mandal confirmed the expulsions, saying that the decision was taken after reviewing the conduct of these members during the election campaign.

“These leaders have been found indulging in activities detrimental to the party’s interests. They have either contested independently or supported rival candidates, thereby violating party discipline,” Mandal stated in the letter.

The list of expelled members includes sitting MLAs, former legislators, and key organisational functionaries from both state and district levels.

Among the prominent names is Chhote Lal Rai, the sitting MLA from Parsa constituency in Saran district. Rai, a senior leader who has long been associated with the RJD, had won the seat in the 2020 Assembly elections by defeating JD(U)’s Chandrika Roy with a margin of over 17,000 votes. Interestingly, Rai had earlier represented the same constituency under the JD(U) banner before switching to RJD.

The move mirrors a similar step taken by the Janata Dal (United) just days earlier, which expelled 16 leaders for rebellion and contesting against the party’s official candidates.

With this disciplinary purge, both major regional parties — RJD and JD(U) — are signaling zero tolerance toward internal dissent ahead of the crucial Bihar Assembly elections, as they strive to project unity and discipline within their respective ranks.
