Authors Note-My book is a culmination of my journey, inspired by my father, a passionate Police Officer who served in the UP Police. My father wrote a book, which continues to motivate me, is a testament to his character and commitment. His experiences and writings have instilled in me a sense of duty, resilience and compassion. I'm proud to follow in his footsteps and carry forward his legacy. I would like to dedicate this book to my Late parents (Shri J.R. Gupta& Smt. Sushila Gupta), whose courage and conviction inspire me every day.
I want to express my deepest gratitude to my family. My wife, Mrs. Manju Gupta, has been my rock, providing unwavering support and encouragement throughout this journey. My children, Ajitesh Gupta and Khushi Gupta, have brought immense joy and light to my life and I am grateful for their presence.
During my LLM pursuit at National Law University, Delhi, my time at NLU Delhi was truly transformative and it was during this period that I gained valuable insights into crime and criminal patterns in India from ancient to present times. This sparked the idea to write a comprehensive book on policing and crime trends and I am thrilled to share it with all of you today.
The evolution of the Indian police can be categorized into distinct phases, including the Vedic Period, the Islamic Period, the British Period and the Post-Independence era tracing its journey from British colonial rule to the present day. It examines the shifts in prevalent crimes, public sentiments, and police capabilities over time. From analyzing post-independence crime trends to discussing contemporary challenges, this book offers a nuanced understanding of policing in India.
I am reminded of the complex and flexible administrative systems that existed in ancient and medieval India. From the Mauryan and Gupta empires to the Delhi Sultanate and Mughal Empire, each period has contributed to the development of our policing system. However, it was the British colonial rule that had a lasting impact on our police system, shaping it into an instrument of state coercion rather than a service to the people.
Today, we face new challenges in policing, from cybercrime and financial fraud to violence against women and terrorism. Our existing policing model is strained, and it is imperative that we transform it to focus on the citizen and adopt a proactive and preventive approach.
The book offers a nuanced understanding of policing in India, tracing its journey from British colonial rule to the present day, and examining shifts in prevalent crimes, public sentiments, and police capabilities over time.
Following the book launch, a token of appreciation, a book and a plant pot was presented to the esteemed guests. The program concluded on a successful note, marking a memorable occasion for all attendees.
