Under the “Panasonic Harit Umang – Joy of Green” initiative, Panasonic India has taken a significant step in addressing the growing issue of electronic waste (e-waste) by launching an E-Waste Collection Drive. As part of this initiative, Panasonic India collaborated with Mata Sundri College for Women and selected as the central hub for e-waste collection across Delhi, with the campaign specifically targeting all schools and colleges in the region. This selection reflects the institution’s commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.
The primary goal of the initiative is to raise awareness about the proper disposal of e-waste and promote environmental responsibility. E-waste, which includes discarded electronic devices such as mobile phones, laptops, and other gadgets, contains hazardous materials that can harm the environment if not properly recycled. By establishing a structured collection system, the drive aims to mitigate the environmental impact of e-waste while encouraging more responsible disposal practices among the public.
The E-Waste Collection Drive was officially launched on October 9, 2024, at Mata Sundri College’s premises. The college's role as the central collection center was underscored during the event, with a focus on mobilizing schools and colleges across Delhi to participate. The launch event was marked by a call to action from various leaders involved in the initiative.
Prof. Harpreet Kaur, Principal of Mata Sundri College for Women, spoke about the importance of student involvement in the initiative. She emphasized that the participation of students was critical not only to ensure the success of the e-waste drive but also to instil a sense of environmental consciousness in the younger generation. By actively engaging in sustainable practices, students can become agents of change in their communities, encouraging others to follow suit.
Ms. Ritu Ghosh, Head of Corporate Affairs & Sustainability at Panasonic India, also addressed the gathering, encouraging all educational institutions to actively participate in the drive. She highlighted Panasonic India’s commitment to sustainability and the company’s ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental footprint. Ms. Ghosh reiterated that collaborative efforts between corporations, educational institutions, and the public are key to tackling environmental challenges such as e-waste management.
Additionally Dr. Uzma Nadeem, Convener of Earthcon: The Eco Club and Programme Officer-NSS Unit of Mata Sundri College for Women, was appointed as the Nodal Officer for the E-Waste Collection Hub. Her role involves overseeing the logistics of the drive, ensuring the smooth collection of e-waste, and coordinating efforts with various participating institutions. Earthcon, as an eco-conscious student group, plays a pivotal role in supporting the college's broader environmental initiatives and helping spread awareness about the significance of responsible e-waste disposal.
The Panasonic Harit Umang–Joy of Green initiative aims to go beyond mere collection efforts by educating students, staff, and the local community on the environmental hazards of improper e-waste disposal. Through workshops, seminars, and hands-on participation, the initiative seeks to create a ripple effect of environmental awareness, fostering a culture of sustainability and proper resource management across Delhi.
