Welcome Ceremony for Newly Elected BCD Members and Band Ceremony for 40 Newly Enrolled Advocates Held at Saket

The Lawyers Welfare Society organised a welcome ceremony for the newly elected members of the Bar Council of Delhi (BCD), along with a band ceremony for 40 newly enrolled advocates, at the Seminar Hall of Saket Bar Association.
Senior advocates Shri K.K. Manan, Shri R.S. Goswami, Shri Murari Tiwari, along with Shri Rajpal Kasana, Shri Rajesh Mishra, Shri Piyush Gupta, Shri Rahul Sharma and Shri Raman Sharma, were present on the occasion. The senior members placed bands on the newly enrolled advocates and blessed them for a bright and successful future in the legal profession.
Speaking before the members of the Bar Council of Delhi, President of the Lawyers Welfare Society, Shri Vishal Sharma, highlighted the chamber shortage faced by advocates practising at Saket Courts, describing it as one of the most serious problems confronting the legal fraternity.
He stated that Saket Courts came into existence on 28 August 2010, when the South and South-East District Courts were shifted from Patiala House to Saket. At that time, the Saket Bar Association had approximately 11,500 advocate members. By 2026, the number of advocates has increased to approximately 15,000–16,000, whereas there are only 666 chambers available at Saket Courts.
He further pointed out that even many senior advocates with more than 15 years of practice do not have adequate space to sit and work. Therefore, there is an urgent and pressing need for the construction of a new chamber block at Saket Courts to provide adequate working space for advocates.
Shri Vishal Sharma said that the Lawyers Welfare Society has consistently raised issues concerning the welfare and interests of advocates from time to time.
Advocate Anup Kalia stated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, the Society had approached the High Court by filing a writ petition seeking waiver of chamber rent and maintenance charges for advocates. He further stated that the Society had also raised the issue of conversion of commercial electricity meters installed in advocates’ chambers into domestic meters, as well as the construction of a metro station near Saket Courts, among several other issues concerning the legal fraternity.
Advocates Varun Goswami and Geetika Goyal stated that the Lawyers Welfare Society had also taken up the issue of the Advocates Protection Act/Advocates Protection Bill with the Government of India. They said that the proposed legislation has been pending before Parliament for a considerable period and that the Society has been continuously raising the voice of advocates before the Central Government for its early implementation.
Advocates Lokesh, Shreyansh Dubey, Abhishek and Sunil Sharma stated that the Society had recently taken up the issue of the pecuniary jurisdiction of the District Courts. They explained that in other states, District Courts have unlimited pecuniary jurisdiction in civil matters, whereas in Delhi, the pecuniary jurisdiction of the District Courts is presently limited to ?2 crore.
They further stated that the Delhi High Court had issued a notification enhancing the pecuniary jurisdiction of the District Courts up to ?10 crore. However, as the Government of India has not yet formally approved and published the enhanced jurisdiction in the Gazette, the District Courts in Delhi continue to exercise jurisdiction up to ?2 crore.
The advocates stated that the Lawyers Welfare Society would continue its efforts and fight for the enhancement of the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi District Courts to unlimited jurisdiction, in the larger interest of the legal fraternity and litigants.
