Honouring Ancestors Through the Bhagwat: Pandit Shubham Agnihotri on an Enduring Spiritual Tradition

The Shrimad Bhagwat holds a special place in Hindu spiritual tradition, not only as a sacred scripture but also as a means of remembering and offering prayers for departed ancestors, says Pandit Shubham Agnihotri.

Speaking about the significance of the tradition, Pandit Agnihotri said every family should consider organising a Shrimad Bhagwat Katha at least once in their lifetime. For those who may not be able to arrange the complete seven-day discourse, he said, a recitation of the original scripture, commonly referred to as Mool Path, can also be undertaken according to one's means and faith.

According to Pandit Agnihotri, the practice assumes particular significance because many people do not possess complete details about their own birth, including the exact date, month, year, time and place. Such information is traditionally considered important in Hindu astrology for preparing a birth chart.

He further pointed to the traditional belief surrounding Pitru Dosha, an astrological concept associated with unresolved ancestral obligations. While discussing the subject, he said that families who believe they may be facing such difficulties often turn to religious practices such as the Shrimad Bhagwat Path as an expression of devotion and a prayer for ancestral peace.

The priest also spoke about families who have experienced sudden or unexpected deaths. Accidental deaths, including those caused by drowning, fire, poisoning or other unforeseen circumstances, are traditionally described in Hindu belief as Akaal Mrityu, or untimely death.

According to these religious traditions, performing sacred recitations and rituals for such departed family members is considered a way of praying for their peace and spiritual well-being. Pandit Agnihotri said the Shrimad Bhagwat is traditionally regarded by devotees as an important scripture in this context.

However, he stressed that the practice should not be viewed only as a response to family problems.

“Even when a family is doing well, remembering one's ancestors is an important expression of gratitude,” he said. “The prosperity and well-being enjoyed by one generation are often seen as part of the blessings and sacrifices of those who came before.”

For Pandit Agnihotri, conducting the Shrimad Bhagwat Katha or Mool Path is therefore not merely a ritual intended to address difficulties, but also a way of preserving family traditions, remembering previous generations and expressing gratitude towards one's roots.
