There should be no laxity in the maintenance of Tighra reservoir. Also, its water should be managed as best as possible and efforts should be made to increase the capacity of the dam. District-in-charge and Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsiram Silawat gave instructions to the officials of the Water Resources Department to this effect. Shri Silawat had arrived yesterday to inspect the leakage repair work done in Tighra reservoir, the main source of drinking water supply of Gwalior city. During this, he also saw the work done for the structural strength of the reservoir.

During the inspection, Chief Engineer Water Resources Shri SK Verma, Superintendent Engineer Shri Rajesh Chaturvedi and Executive Engineer Shri Pankaj Singh Sengar along with other concerned officials were present.

It is known that about 18 crore rupees were sanctioned by Water Resources Minister and Gwalior District In-charge Minister Shri Tulsiram Silawat for repairing the leakage of Tighra reservoir. This work has been completed in two phases. In the first phase, the leakage point was found and treated from inside Tighra by divers and underwater remotely operated vehicles. In the second phase, leakage was stopped by drilling and grounding the top of the dam. Also, the body wall of the dam was strengthened. Due to these works, the leakage of the dam has been completely stopped at present, due to which drinking water for one to one and a half months has been preserved for the city. On this occasion, the Minister in-charge Shri Silawat said that the Tighra Dam, built by the then Maharaja of Gwalior State Shri Madhavrao Scindia I in 1917 under the technical guidance of renowned civil engineer Bharat Ratna Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, is a priceless heritage of excellent engineering. There should be no laxity in its maintenance. The catchment area of ??this reservoir is 414.24 square kilometers, submerged area is 9132 hectares, total filling capacity is 130.80 million cubic meters and live filling capacity is 124.23 million cubic meters.

During the inspection, Mr. Silawat also took information about Upper Kakato, Kakato and Pahsari dams built in the upper region of Tighra. Officials informed that these three dams are full of water. Water is brought to Tighra from these three dams through Kakato-Pahsari canal and Pahsari-Sank canal. Due to all the dams being full, there will be no problem in the drinking water supply of the city till August 2025. Due to the dams being full, the groundwater level of the rural area has also improved.

Raipur Dam, Mama Ka Dam, Jakhoda Dam and Veerpur Dam located in Gwalior district are also filled to full capacity this year after about 30 to 40 years. It has been possible to fill these dams through the Sank Noon Canal and Feeder Channel being built under the direction of Water Resources Minister Shri Silawat. Excess water from Pahsari and Kakato Dam has been brought to these dams through these feeder channels and canals. On this occasion, it was also informed that Harsi reservoir is also filled to its full capacity. Harsi provides irrigation facility to about one lakh hectares. There is a wave of happiness among the farmers due to the dam being filled.
