Nationwide Mock Drill 'Operation Abhyaas' Today Across 244 Districts to Test Emergency Preparedness

In a major step towards strengthening civil defence and disaster response mechanisms, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) in coordination with the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) is conducting a nationwide mock drill today under the codename "Operation Abhyaas".

The drill is being conducted simultaneously across 244 districts in multiple states, with the objective of preparing both authorities and the general public for emergency situations such as air raids, natural disasters, terrorist attacks, and other crisis events.

 States Actively Participating:

  • Delhi
Over 55 key locations across all 11 districts are part of the exercise. At 4:00 PM, more than 60 air raid sirens will be tested. Mock evacuations and response coordination will take place at schools, offices, hospitals, and public places.

  • Telangana (Hyderabad)
Within the Outer Ring Road, mock drills are being held between 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM involving the police, civil defence, fire services, and GHMC.

  • Uttar Pradesh
The drill includes multiple districts with simulated blackout and emergency scenarios. Bareilly will see a 10-minute total blackout as part of the drill.

  • Kerala
Mock drills are scheduled across all 14 districts. Public institutions and hospitals are actively participating to test response times and coordination.

  • Maharashtra
In cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur, as well as selected villages, evacuation, alert testing, and emergency response protocols are being executed in real-time.

Objectives of Operation Abhyaas:

  • Evaluate the coordination between civil defence, police, medical services, and administration.

  • Train citizens to respond correctly during emergencies such as air raids, bomb threats, or natural calamities.

  • Test real-time response systems like air raid sirens, evacuation alarms, communication tools, and mock blackouts.

 What Citizens Should Do:

  • Remain calm and alert during the scheduled time.

  • Cooperate with local authorities during evacuation or simulation activities.

  • Avoid spreading rumours or panic on social media.

  • Treat this as an opportunity to learn safety protocols and understand emergency response steps.

 Why It Matters:

With increasing threats from both natural and man-made disasters, mock drills like Operation Abhyaas help identify gaps in the system and improve readiness. They also empower citizens to act swiftly and responsibly in real emergencies.
