INDORE Geetkar Damodar Virmal Thousands of women participated in the walkathon program in traditional attire (sari) – world record made. Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said that the Indian attire saree is a symbol of femininity, dignity and self-confidence. This is a garment made by India, for India, by India. Like our national flag, the tricolor, saree is also a brand and a strong identity of India. Saree is also a garment that unifies India, which is full of diversity. He said that sarees have different colors in different regions across the country, but the soul is the same. Saree encompasses the diverse colors and cultures of the country. Saree is the dress of every section of the society, it is suitable for every occasion, it is also a symbol of social harmony.
In the special presence of Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav, a unique event was organized today in Indore under the Van Bharat Abhiyan with the theme of “Self-reliant women, wearing saree with pride”. In this event, about 40 thousand women participated in the walkathon program in traditional attire (sari). The Chief Minister handed over the provisional certificate of registering this program in the World Book of Records to the Minister of the concerned department, Shri Dilip Jaiswal. On this occasion, Union Minister of State for Textiles and Railways, Smt. Darshana Jardosh was also specially present. Water Resources Minister Shri Tulsiram Silavat, Minister of State for Cottage and Village Industries with Independent Charge Shri Dilip Jaiswal, MP Shri Shankar Lalwani and Ms. Kavita Patidar, Mayor Shri Pushyamitra Bhargava, MLA Shri Mahendra Hardiya, Shri Ramesh Mendola, Mrs. Malini were present as special guests in the program. Gaur, Shri Madhu Verma, Shri Golu Shukla, Shri Gaurav Randive and other public representatives were present.
Addressing the program, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav said that saree is everyone’s favorite garment and is suitable for every occasion. Saree is also a powerful symbol to bridge the divide of rich-poor and regionalism based on caste-religion. Saree is also a link connecting one generation to another. Saree also increases family unity. Saree is also a symbol of India’s growing stature at the global level and the growing self-confidence of Indians. It also symbolizes the support India’s cultural emergence receives from the mother powers of the country. The country has also witnessed an unfortunate period when the once glorious garment like saree was made a symbol of conservatism and backwardness. The obligation to wear business suits was imposed on women to appear educated and professional. When the British came to India, Indian products were very popular in the global market, India controlled almost a quarter of the global economy. The clothes made by Indian weavers were in huge demand all over the world. Without destroying the market for sarees and Indian clothes, where would the cloth business of the English mills have continued? Therefore the British made every possible effort. Describing Indian clothes as a sign of backwardness and making suits and boots a symbol of being educated was one such ideological conspiracy. The result of this conspiracy was that the market of sarees, dhotis and kurtas kept on decreasing and our weaver brothers faced livelihood crisis. It was our misfortune that even after independence, for many decades we got such governments which did not make any efforts towards the revival of Indianness by ending the mentality of slavery. In the last ten years, Prime Minister Modi ji has started the practice of preserving and beautifying culture along with progress, its results are now visible. Inspired by the spirit of “Make in India”, “Self-reliant India” and “Vocal for Local”, the countrymen are now enthusiastically adopting indigenous products, and this has taken the form of a mass movement. The inclination of our young men has increased towards kurta-pajama and that of young women towards saree.
Chief Minister Dr. Yadav said that Madhya Pradesh has a glorious tradition of handicrafts and handloom related construction works. Our Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees are world famous for their variety, color combinations and designs. Taking inspiration from the vision and guidance of the Prime Minister, we are continuously making efforts towards giving global popularity to indigenous crafts and handloom products. Events like Saree Walkathon, besides being a celebration of women empowerment, are also important initiatives towards livelihood enhancement of our artisan and weaver brothers. Through this walkathon, we are celebrating the art of traditional artisans and craftsmen of the country. Such an event will increase the interest of our new generation towards artistic sarees made on handlooms across the country.
