In 1992, country music star Reba McEntire helped open Reba’s Ranch House in Denison, Texas, to give families a safe place to stay when a loved one was in hospital. The idea began after her doctor, Darius Maggi, described how many visitors were sleeping in hospital chairs, waiting-room floors or their cars. More than three decades later, the charity reports it has welcomed over 35,000 families, offering rest, meals, emotional support and spiritual care at no cost. How the idea beganReba McEntire grew up in southeastern Oklahoma and travelled to Denison, Texas, for medical appointments with Dr Darius Maggi, who also cared for her sisters and many of her nieces and nephews.

During one visit, Maggi told her about the needs facing families who travelled long distances to be near hospitalised relatives. McEntire offered to hold a concert to raise both money and awareness. Over the following years, the community organised concerts, golf tournaments, parades and fishing tournaments to support the cause, extending help to Denison as well as nearby parts of southeastern Oklahoma and northeastern Texas. The concept was similar to a Ronald McDonald House, but with one important difference.

Reba’s Ranch House was designed to be open to anyone who needed accommodation while a loved one was in hospital, regardless of the patient’s age or condition.A home for exhausted familiesMany guests arrive after days of poor sleep, missed meals and constant worry. Before staying at the house, families often report that they have been sleeping in waiting rooms, sitting in patient rooms overnight or even resting in their cars outside the hospital.

Reba’s Ranch House provides a calm setting where caregivers can rest, eat and receive support. The charity describes its work as caring for the caregivers, helping people cope with the stress and uncertainty that come with a medical crisis. According to the organisation, 89 per cent of guests report improvements in sleep, daily meals and anxiety after their stay. The house is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year round. What guests receiveThe house offers 12 comfortable rooms, each furnished with handmade quilts to create a more homely atmosphere.

Guests also have access to a community kitchen and dining area, where quick meals are available and weekly meals are prepared through the House’s Meal Ministry Programme, as per their website.Beyond food and accommodation, the charity focuses on emotional and spiritual wellbeing. The Legacy Library offers a quiet space for reading, meditation or prayer, while outdoor paths and sitting areas give guests room to pause and reflect.

Families with children can use a stocked playroom with age-appropriate toys, puzzles, games and books. A laundry room, landscaped grounds and memorial spaces add to the sense that the house is designed for people going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. The Room for HopeOne of the charity’s most distinctive services is the Room for Hope, created by Girl Scout Maria Hayes for her Gold Award project.

She recognised that patients and families dealing with cancer needed access to practical support without having to travel outside the community, as per their website. The room provides items such as wigs, prosthetics, bras, hats, scarves, books and comfort items at no charge. Donations come from survivors, church groups and community members, and guests are asked only to return items when they are no longer needed. The programme reflects the wider philosophy of Reba’s Ranch House.

It is not only a place to sleep, but a support system that responds to the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of families in crisis.A lasting community effortThe house is owned and operated by the Texoma Community Foundation, formerly the Texoma Health Foundation. Foundation leaders have described it as the heart of the organisation, and staff members continue to support guests through meals, encouragement, spiritual care and connections to local resources.Since opening in 1992, Reba’s Ranch House has expanded into a larger facility under the same roof as the foundation.

Its continued growth reflects the scale of need in the region and the community’s willingness to support families during medical emergencies.More than 30 years after McEntire helped cut the ribbon, the charity remains true to its founding purpose: ensuring that no family has to face a hospital stay alone, hungry or without a safe place to rest. You use AI every day.
