Noah’s Ark mystery: Researchers find wood 30 feet underground in Turkey

30 Oct 2026, 12:43 AM 4 min read

Researchers investigating a ship-shaped geological formation in eastern Turkey claim they have discovered wood-like material deep beneath the ground, raising fresh questions about whether the site could be linked to the biblical story of Noah’s Ark. However, the findings have yet to establish that the structure is the legendary vessel. The reported discovery was made at the Durupınar Formation, a roughly 538-foot-long structure near Mount Ararat in Turkey.

First identified in 1959, the formation has attracted Ark hunters for decades because of its unusual, ship-like outline and its proximity to the region associated with the biblical account.According to the biblical story, Noah built a giant vessel to shelter his family and representatives of the animal kingdom during a catastrophic flood. The researchers are investigating whether the formation could be connected to that account, which is traditionally associated with events thousands of years ago.Andrew Jones, founder of Noah’s Ark Scans and the project’s lead, told the Daily Mail that his team had found both charred and uncharred wood nearly 30 feet below the surface.

Jones suggested that the charred material could potentially represent remnants of the Ark, although the origin and age of the samples would need to be established. He also acknowledged an alternative possibility: the charred material could be linked to a campfire lit by a shepherd who might have taken shelter at the site. The team has not determined whether the material was deliberately burned or exposed to fire through a natural event, such as a lightning strike or volcanic activity.Could the wood have survived for thousands of years? The researchers have suggested that burning might have helped preserve some of the material by slowing the decomposition process.

They have also drawn a connection to the biblical account, in which Noah is instructed to coat the Ark with pitch, a substance used for waterproofing that is also flammable. These ideas, however, remain hypotheses rather than proof of the structure’s biblical origins. Establishing whether the material is ancient wood, determining its age and identifying the circumstances in which it was preserved would be essential to assessing the claim. The Durupınar Formation has long been the subject of debate, with some researchers and observers arguing that its shape could have resulted from natural geological processes rather than the presence of a man-made vessel.Ground-penetrating radar reveals alleged chambers beneath the formationNoah’s Ark Scans has previously used ground-penetrating radar to investigate the formation.

According to the team, the scans revealed what appeared to be a network of underground chambers and passageways, with dimensions that the researchers believe resemble descriptions of the Ark in the Bible.Jones has referred to a central cavity identified in the team’s interpretation of the scans as the “Atrium”. In an interview with GB News earlier in the year, he suggested that the alleged compartments could have accommodated animals as well as Noah and his family.“God told Noah to bring the animals in,” Jones told the broadcaster, explaining his interpretation of the supposed internal spaces. The radar findings have not, by themselves, established that the underground features are man-made or that they belong to a vessel.

Such interpretations would require further geological investigation and independent verification.Soil analysis adds to the team’s claimsThe researchers have also cited differences in soil composition as potential evidence that the formation may contain material distinct from the surrounding ground. According to the team, soil samples collected from inside the formation contained around three times as much organic matter and 38% more potassium than samples taken from outside it.Jones has argued that the higher organic content could be consistent with decayed wood, given that the decomposition of plant material can contribute organic matter to soil.“Noah’s Ark was a giant wooden boat, according to the Bible,” Jones said.

“As wood decays, you’re gonna find elevated organic matter.”However, differences in organic matter and potassium do not independently demonstrate the presence of a wooden vessel. Other environmental and geological processes can also influence soil composition, making further testing necessary.Researchers plan further testsJones has also said that a drilling and scanning expedition conducted in the previous autumn strengthened his team’s case.

According to him, the investigation did not reveal the natural bedrock that some critics believe underlies the formation. Instead, the team reported encountering rich, dark soil that it intends to test for traces of decayed wood and other organic material. The researchers plan to conduct additional analysis to determine whether the soil contains evidence that could support their interpretation of the site.
