Tom Brady’s referee criticism sparks questions: Are NFL owners limiting his role?

27 Oct 2026, 07:50 PM 3 min read

Tom Brady spent much of Sunday's Packers-Lions broadcast questioning flags, and it put an old issue back in front of the NFL. Brady is FOX's lead NFL analyst. He also owns a piece of the Las Vegas Raiders, and that comes with limits on how hard he can criticize officials. Detroit won 20–17, but the penalties took over the conversation. Roughing calls against Green Bay for hits on Jared Goff drew his sharpest reaction.

As of Monday, no punishment has been announced, FOX declined to comment, and the NFL had not immediately responded.Tom Brady's officiating criticism and the line the NFL set for himThe issue is not that Tom Brady disagreed with the officials. Analysts do that every Sunday. What makes his case different is the Raiders stake, and Front Office Sports reporter Mark Maske laid out how the league treats it once the broadcast started drawing attention."The NFL's restrictions on Brady, stemming from his role as a Raiders part-owner, include a limitation on how far he can go in criticizing the officiating.

It's subjective," Maske wrote."But the indication always has been that Brady can criticize a call that's made during a game in his Fox role, but he can't take it to egregious levels."Notice the word subjective. It means nobody outside the league office can say exactly where the line sits.Sunday gave Brady several chances to find it. Green Bay was flagged for roughing Goff on separate plays involving Brenton Cox Jr.

and Karl Brooks, and Brady had objections to both. On the late flag against Brooks, he sounded baffled."No, my goodness! What is that?" he said. "You can't keep tacking on 15 yards."That reads as a man reacting to a play, not attacking the people who made the call. FOX rules analyst Dean Blandino backed Brady's assessment of that tackle, which helps his case. What happened the last time he pushed backThe league has been here before.

In November 2024, Brady questioned Brian Branch's ejection during another Packers-Lions game, and the NFL took no disciplinary action.NFL spokesperson Brian McCarthy said then that the concern was excessive criticism or comments questioning an official's integrity. Those are two clear markers. Heat alone does not seem to be the test. Questioning integrity is. Going by what has been reported, Brady's Sunday comments were about whether specific flags were right, not about whether anyone was acting in bad faith. The awkwardness comes with the job.

FOX wants Brady to explain what he sees, and viewers expect a straight answer when a replay makes a penalty hard to follow. The ownership stake adds a second audience in the league office. Every sharp line gets read twice. So far, no flag has come from the league office. Until one does, Brady's Sunday stays on the safe side of a line only the league can see.Get the latest Sports News and Live updates.
