In a statement, Agriculture Department Director B. Gopi denied issuing any directions to seed dealers to sell paddy seeds only after buyers provide a self-declaration. Unverified news is being circulated on several platforms, misleading the farmers, he said. Lodge complaints if asked for self-declarations Assuring farmers that there was no need for concern over the purchase of seeds, the department advised them to lodge complaints with the respective mandal or district agriculture officers if dealers insisted on self-declarations or sold substandard seeds.
The department warned it would take strict action against dealers found violating the provisions of the Seeds Act. It urged farmers to rely on official communications and not be misled by reports that could cause confusion over seed purchase. Cultivate crops that need less water and mature faster The department, however, has advised farmers to consider cultivating alternative crops that require less water and mature faster during the upcoming Yasangi (Rabi) season, given the possibility of reduced rainfall due to the El Niño effect.
Water availability, groundwater levels and electricity demand would be important factors in planning the season, the statement said. The department has directed officials concerned to ensure adequate availability of seeds for pulses, millets, oilseeds and vegetable crops to meet farmers’ requirements.
