US declares national emergency to secure power grid; what it means for Americans

29 Oct 2026, 02:35 PM 3 min read

US government has announced a national emergency to protect the country’s electricity grid from potential security risks posed by foreign-made equipment. In an executive order signed by President Trump, the government authorised restrictions on certain foreign-made equipment that could pose risks to national security, including equipment used in power generation, transmission and grid operations.

The order also allows officials to impose security conditions on existing installations and replace equipment deemed risky. The move comes days after the US Department of Energy issued an emergency order in 13 States on October 12 authorising PJM Interconnection, the regional transmission operator serving much of the Mid-Atlantic and Midwest regions, to run designated power generation units as needed to protect grid stability. What the national emergency means in this caseThe national emergency declaration allows the US government to take stricter measures against foreign-made equipment that could pose security risks to the country's electricity grid.

Under the order, the Energy Department can restrict the purchase, import and installation of certain equipment if officials determine that it could expose critical infrastructure to cyberattacks, unauthorised access or supply disruptions.Notably, the order does not ban all foreign-made electrical equipment. Instead, it targets equipment linked to designated foreign entities that the government considers a security risk.

It also allows officials to impose security requirements on existing installations, including monitoring, isolation or replacement of equipment deemed unsafe. Why is US doing this nowThe order says the risks have become more serious as the US becomes increasingly dependent on reliable electricity to support AI data centres, advanced manufacturing, defence production and other critical infrastructure.“The rapid growth of advanced manufacturing, data centers, artificial intelligence, and defense production has increased the Nation’s dependence on abundant, reliable electricity and magnified the consequences of a successful attack or supply disruption on the bulk-power system,” the order says.A disruption to the electricity grid could affect businesses, essential services and national security.

The administration argues that reducing reliance on potentially vulnerable foreign suppliers would help protect the network. It further stated that the “continued United States reliance on foreign sources of bulk-power system electric equipment with these potential national security vulnerabilities also creates a supply chain vulnerability that could eliminate the supply of these products in the United States as a result of disruptions in international trade or other causes.”What it means for AmericansFor Americans, the national emergency order could lead to tighter security checks on equipment used to supply electricity to homes, businesses and critical infrastructure.

The government may require utilities to monitor, secure or replace certain equipment identified as a potential security risk. However, the order does not mean consumers will immediately face changes to their electricity supply. The move could also create opportunities for US manufacturers of transformers, generators and other power grid equipment as the government seeks to prioritise domestically made products.

However, replacing existing equipment and shifting supply chains could involve additional costs for utilities and manufacturers. You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
