Texas man, 86, spends 39 years building 62-foot boat; strangers step in

22 Oct 2026, 01:06 PM 4 min read

An 86-year-old Texas man has spent nearly four decades building a 62-foot steel boat in his front yard, hoping to one day sail it to Alaska. Now, after three visitors discovered his long-standing dream, strangers have come together to help him finish the vessel and move it to a launch site. According to a report by Good News Network, Dale, a resident of Mineral Wells, Texas, began the project in 1987, and his boat is now approximately 75% complete. The vessel features four staterooms, a master bedroom, a lounge, a kitchen and an engine room.

However, completing the ambitious project has become increasingly difficult, and moving the massive steel structure out of his yard will require heavy machinery. With the boat still waiting to reach the water, an unexpected encounter has given Dale's decades-long dream fresh momentum. How three visitors discovered Dale's dreamThe story took an unexpected turn when three Englishmen, Laurence Benson, Benjie and Will, who were working in Texas, learned about Dale's boat through their friend Kiah.

Kiah, who was in the area for work, spotted the unusual vessel and sent Laurence a video, encouraging him to meet its builder. In the GoFundMe campaign he launched to help Dale, Laurence described how the group travelled from Fort Worth to meet him."We tried calling, but couldn’t get through. So we drove an hour and a half from Fort Worth and turned up unannounced. Benjie knocked on the door and spoke to Dale’s wife.

Dale was still putting his socks on," Laurence wrote. The visitors soon discovered that the boat was much more than an unfinished construction project. As Dale began talking about it, his enthusiasm for the vessel and his ambition to sail it to Alaska became apparent. Laurence said Dale even climbed a ladder to show the visitors the deck, despite reportedly not having been up there for years. The encounter was recorded and shared on Instagram, where the video attracted around 670,000 likes and more than 6,000 comments, bringing Dale's story to a much wider audience.Crowdfunding effort aims to get the boat into the waterMoved by Dale's determination, Laurence and his friends decided to help him take the next step towards completing the vessel.

They launched a fundraising campaign to cover the remaining construction work, the equipment needed to bring the boat down the hill from the yard and its transportation to a suitable launch site.According to the campaign, the boat's size and location make moving it a significant logistical challenge. Even after years of welding and construction, getting the vessel onto the water requires more than finishing its remaining components.Within days, the campaign raised more than $41,000 towards its $45,000 target, with contributions from more than 1,500 donors, according to the reported figures.

Laurence estimated that approximately $50,000 would be needed to move the boat and get it into the water. The fundraising effort, however, is not intended to end with the vessel's relocation. Laurence has said he wants to work with Dale's family to help see the project through to completion and give the boatbuilder a chance to fulfil his lifelong ambition.A dream nearly four decades in the makingDale's project has taken shape over a period when much of the world around him has changed.

What began in his front yard in 1987 has grown into a 62-foot vessel, built piece by piece over the years. While the boat is not yet ready to sail, the response to his story has demonstrated how a personal dream can bring together people who have never met its owner. For Dale, the immediate challenge is to complete the remaining work and get the boat safely to a launch site. Whether the vessel will ultimately make the journey to Alaska remains to be seen, but the support from strangers has brought him closer to a goal he has pursued for nearly 40 years. You use AI every day.
