Elon Musk spent $446 mn on US midterms; reposts 2022 prediction on Democrats
Elon Musk has dug up a four-year-old post about the Democrats, days before the US midterm elections he has spent nearly half a billion dollars trying to shape. On Friday (October 30), the Tesla and SpaceX CEO quote-posted his May 2022 message on X, formerly Twitter, with a short caption: "Four years ago... And that is exactly what happened." The post crossed 7 million views in about a day.The original post is where Elon Musk first announced his break from the Democrat party he had backed for years.
"In the past I voted Democrat, because they were (mostly) the kindness party," he wrote, adding that they had become "the party of division & hate" and that he would now vote Republican. He ended with a prediction: "Now, watch their dirty tricks campaign against me unfold," followed by a popcorn emoji.Elon Musk is now the biggest single-cycle political donor in modern US historyElon Musk has put at least $445.77 million into Republican-aligned political action committees and groups since last year, according to Federal Election Commission data as of October 29.
That is well above the roughly $290 million he spent backing Donald Trump and Republicans in 2024. About $200 million of it came in the final two months of campaigning alone. The biggest share, $216 million, went to his own America PAC, which has targeted 43 House and Senate races. Texas has drawn the most money. Tesla and Spacex CEO Elon Musk has poured well over $200 million into the Senate contest between Republican Ken Paxton and Democrat James Talarico, including $168 million to the Senate Leadership Fund.
It is now the most expensive race of the midterms.Talarico has turned that spending into a campaign issue. "This Senate seat doesn't belong to Elon Musk," he told supporters at a rally earlier this week. How Elon Musk went from 'I've done enough' to Republicans' top backer in a yearThe spending is a turnaround from May 2025, when Elon Musk said, "I think I've done enough" on political donations after public backlash over his role in the early months of Trump's second term. The 2022 thread has its own backstory.
When former Obama speechwriter Jon Favreau replied that Musk was backing "electric vehicle-hating climate deniers", Musk shot back that the Biden administration had tried to sideline Tesla, even though the company made twice as many EVs as the rest of the US industry combined.Ahead of the midterm elections, billionaire Elon Musk warned that a Democratic sweep of the White House and Congress in 2028 could spell the "end of democracy," outlining three moves he fears the party would make to cement its political power.Elon Musk outlines his three biggest fears from Democrats coming to powerMusk outlined his three "biggest" concerns about Democrats gaining unified control of Washington, in an X post, warning that the party would move to grant statehood to Washington, DC, and Puerto Rico, legalize immigrants living in the country illegally and expand the Supreme Court.
"My biggest concern is that if there is a clean sweep by Democrats of the House, Senate and Presidency in 2028, they will:1. Make DC and Puerto Rico states to gain a strong majority in the Senate.2. Open the borders and legalize everyone living in America illegally to cement a permanent majority.3. Increase the size of the Supreme Court to gain an immediate majority. This would result in America becoming a permanent one-party state and the end of democracy in any meaningful sense of the word. All that is needed to ensure this doesn’t happen is 51 Republican senators in 2029.
That is why you should vote for Republican senators this election. Other reasons are irrelevant compared to this one."You use AI every day. Now get your AI Quotient. Take the AIQ test.
