Three strangers find Irishman's lost wedding ring in Italy, fly to return it
An Irish father who thought he had lost his wedding ring in a fast-flowing stream in Italy was reunited with it after three local men spent days searching the water and then flew to Ireland to return it in person. As reported by American media portal Good News Network, Patrick Mohr was holidaying in Italy with his wife, Joanne McHugh, and their children when the 18-carat gold ring slipped off his finger.
The couple had been married for 16 years, making the ring a deeply personal possession. The incident happened while Mohr was playing with his children in the water. One of them grabbed his hand, causing the ring to slide off and disappear downstream. Mohr initially thought it was gone for good. His wife decided to ask the only other people nearby for help. They were three Italian friends: Filippo Palagi, Nicola Malloggi and Edoardo Poggi.
Although the men did not have swimming goggles to lend them, they agreed to try to find the ring.Three days of searching the riverAccording to CBC Radio, the three men began their search using kayaks, but their efforts over the first two days proved unsuccessful. They then changed their approach, using snorkelling equipment and securing themselves to boulders with ropes to search a particularly fast-flowing section of the stream.
On the third day, Malloggi spotted a glint among the sand on the riverbed. He reached down and retrieved the gold ring. The men later told Mohr about their discovery by sending a photograph to his phone. He was having dinner with his family in Tuscany when the message arrived from an unfamiliar Italian number. The text read: “Hi Sméagol, look what we found.” Sméagol is a character associated with the One Ring in J.R.R.
Tolkien’s ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ a reference that reflected the friends’ approach to the search.Speaking to CBC Radio, Mohr recalled his reaction: “I put the phone back in my pocket and kept stirring the pasta pot in shock.” He said his wife noticed his expression and asked what had happened. When he showed the family the message, he recalled, “chaos ensued.” Mohr later reflected on the experience, saying: “Sometimes you have to put things out into the universe and ask for help.
And sometimes, you get an answer.”The friends flew to Ireland to return the ringThe three men did not simply post the ring back. They offered to travel to Ireland and hand it over personally, allowing Mohr and his family to continue their holiday without having to arrange an immediate return to Italy. According to Good News Network, Palagi, Malloggi and Poggi took a Ryanair flight to Ireland.
Inspired by ‘The Lord of the Rings,’ they arrived at Mohr’s home dressed as hobbits and singing songs from the film series. After the reunion, Mohr took the visitors sightseeing, including a trip to Glendalough in the Wicklow Mountains and the nearby Glenmalure Valley. The group also visited a local pub for Guinness before returning to the family home for a traditional Irish dinner.
What began with a lost wedding ring had brought together four men who had been strangers just days earlier. Their search had taken three days, and the journey to return the ring turned the chance meeting into a personal connection between Mohr’s family in Ireland and the three friends in Italy. You use AI every day.
