PM questions Congress over party’s MLC election results
New Delhi Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (October 28, 2026) took a dig at the Congress, pointing out that the principal Opposition party failed to win a single seat in the Member of Legislative Council (MLC) elections held using ballot papers across four major States. “MLC elections in 28 seats across four big States — Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar and Karnataka.
Elections held using ballot papers. Guess how many seats Congress won?” said Mr. Modi on X. Uttar Pradesh MLC polls: BJP wins five seats, SP three; counting underway Uttar Pradesh MLC polls: BJP wins five seats, SP three; counting underway The counting is underway in Lucknow, Varanasi, Agra, Meerut, Jhansi, Bareilly and Gorakhpur Uttar Pradesh MLC polls: BJP wins five seats, SP three; counting underway storyline 1 At the time of filing the story, results for eight seats had been declared in Uttar Pradesh.
While the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won five seats, the Samajwadi Party secured three. In Bihar, the BJP-led NDA alliance was close to winning four seats. The Jan Suraaj Party opened its account with one seat, while the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) also secured one seat and Independents bagged two. In Karnataka, the BJP-JD(S) alliance swept all four seats. The Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) had not declared the results for the five MLC constituencies.
‘Whirlwind of lies’ Earlier, at a press briefing, BJP MP and spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi said the MLC election results showed a lack of public support for the Congress party and that its methods were not working. He said the ambitions of Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and the Congress to “spread anarchy by creating a whirlwind of lies” appeared to have been dented by the results.

Guess how many seats Congress won? 🧐— Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) October 28, 2026 “The most important aspect of these elections is that they were conducted through ballot papers and ballot boxes... This makes it clear that the Congress party lacks the ability to secure the support of the public or the concerned electorate in any kind of election, whether conducted using EVMs (Electronic Voting Machines) or through ballot papers and ballot boxes,” he said.
“The Congress party should understand that after spending nearly two weeks sightseeing and enjoying himself, Rahul Gandhi has now returned in all his pomp and glory, talking about launching a movement to create problems for the Indian economy. He should understand that neither the public nor the MLAs are with him,” Mr. Trivedi said. He said that while BJP president Nitin Nabin was touring Uttar Pradesh and Union Home Minister Amit Shah was in Punjab, Mr.
Gandhi was “travelling around” Vietnam. The problem lay neither with EVMs nor with voter lists or ballot papers, but “in the delusions entrenched in their minds and their (Congress’s) habit of not working”, said Mr. Trivedi. On the Keralam Congress’s unconditional apology to the Supreme Court, he described its now-deleted social media post on X about the Chief Justice of India as “highly objectionable, disgraceful and vulgar”.
Responding to the Prime Minister’s post, Congress leader Pawan Khera said Mr. Modi should demonstrate his confidence in the BJP’s electoral prowess by committing to hold all future Lok Sabha and Assembly elections through ballot paper, suspend the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, restore the 13.3 crore deleted voters, remove Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and repeal the law granting him lifelong immunity.
“Until Modi acts on these demands, his claims are nothing but hogwash — hollow words no one can take seriously,” Mr. Khera said.
